Businesses relying on holiday income especially hard hit.


Cancel Christmas for many residents of New York who have relied on business income to make their bills and set the table. Superstorm Sandy has shuttered many area businesses which will remain closed through the holidays.

Restaurants have been particularly hard hit by storm damage because of strict operating guidelines.

BROOKLYN, NY (Catholic Online) - Restaurants in particular, were hard hit by the storm with their waterfront locations and strict codes for business.

Many other places that see an uptick in seasonal shopping have lost all of the year's profits. This has put the private families and owners behind the businesses in the red, and some may never recover.

The government, via FEMA has extended the deadline for those wishing to file for federal assistance to January, 29, and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney is seeking another extension to May 1.
